2009 TELUS Cup

Notre Dame Hounds 11 - Moncton Flyers 3

BRAY STEALS THE SHOW AS FOG DEVILS EARN TIE WITH HOUNDS

LÉVIS, QUE. – The shots kept coming and the chances kept coming. But nearly each and every time, Scott Bray (St. John’s, N.L.) was up to the challenge.

Bray, who has played all three games for St. John’s so far, made 52 saves to give his team a 3-3 tie against the defending TELUS Cup champion Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday afternoon.

Bray’s performance earned him player of the game honours, something that surprised no one in the rink who saw him play on this day. He made a handful of spectacular saves to keep his team in the game. Notre Dame peppered Bray with 17 shots in the final frame as the Hounds tried to get the game-winner.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game on goals by Gould N.L., native James Melindy and Daniel Dale (Grande Prairie, Alta.). AT 16:58 of the first, Zach O’Brien (St. John’s, N.L.) scored his fourth goal of the tournament to make it 2-1 Notre Dame and the Hounds led by a goal after 20 minutes.

At 13:19 of the second, Stefan Matteau (Blaineville, Que.), with his father and former NHLer Stéphane Matteau watching in the stands, scored on a power play to make it 3-1 Notre Dame. It looked like the Hounds might skate away with a win.

But two quick power play goals by St. John’s defenceman Alex Powell (Outer Cove, N.L.) changed the game. First, Powell scored on a 2-on-1, when he snapped a shot short side on Notre Dame’s Riley Parker (Abbotsford, B.C.). Sixty-six seconds later, Powell ripped another shot – this time at the far corner – for another power play marker.

The Fog Devils and Hounds moved to 1-0-2 and into a tie with the Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard.
