SCARBOROUGH PICKS UP IMPORTANT WIN OVER NORTHERN

The Scarborough Sharks are on the board at the 2009 Esso Cup.

Annie Shapero, Gillian Beggs and Megan Wickens had a goal and an assist apiece as the Sharks broke into the win column and took a step towards Friday’s semifinals with a 4-2 win over the Northern Stars on Wednesday afternoon in Calgary.

After Shapero opened the scoring just 2:01 after the opening faceoff, the teams traded goals in the final half of the first period, with Alyssa Sherrard scoring for the Stars before Beggs replied for the Ontario champions.

Wickens pushed the Scarborough lead to two just 51 seconds into the second period and Erin Weston gave her team a little more insurance with a goal 14:20 into the middle frame, sending the Sharks to the second intermission up by three.

Julie Breau tried to jumpstart a Northern comeback, beating Scarborough netminder Marissa Kozovski 52 ticks into the third period, but that would be as close as the Atlantic Region champs would come, as they fell for the third time in as many games.

Beggs and Breau both earned Player of the Game awards for their respective teams.

The Sharks will look to cement their semifinal status on Thursday when they wrap up round robin play against the Westman Wildcats (4 p.m. MT), while the Stars will look for that elusive first win when they hit the ice against Edmonton (1 p.m. MT).
