Canada 7 - South Island Thunderbirds 1

CANADA SPREADS SCORING AROUND IN 7-1 WIN OVER T-BIRDS

COLWOOD, BC – Rebecca Johnston scored two goals, including the game-winner, as Canada’s National Women’s Team defeated the South Island Thunderbirds Midget AAA boys team 7-1 on Thursday night.

Johnston, a Sudbury, ON native who attended Cornell University in 2007-08, scored Canada’s second goal of the first period, which stood as the winner.

Canada is holding its pre-worlds camp in Colwood, BC, just outside of Victoria, as it prepares for the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in Harbin, China.

Thursday’s game was the first of two that Canada will play, as it faces the North Island Silvertips Midget AAA boys team on Saturday (3 p.m. PST, Bear Mountain Arena).

On Thursday, Canada spread the scoring around, with Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Minnesota, WWHL), Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton, CWHL), Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL), Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON/Montreal, CWHL) and Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL) also scoring for the winners.

Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) had three assists for Canada, while Kelly Bechard (Sedley, SK/Calgary, WWHL) added a pair of helpers.

Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL) made 21 saves for the win in Canada’s net. The Thunderbirds actually opened the scoring at 8:04 on a goal by Josh Wyatt but Canada took over from there.

Canada’s National Women’s Team will return to the ice for a practice on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by an autograph session at Bear Mountain Arena at 4:15.

Players and staff will remain in BC until Sunday, when they leave for China. The 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship begins on April 4.
