Game Story

CANTONNIERS BLANK TROJANS AT TELUS CUP

JASON LA ROSE

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Olivier Adam posted 31-save shutout, and the Cantonniers de Magog pulled away in the third period to score a 6-0 win over the Tisdale Trojans in the preliminary-round opener for both Monday at the 2019 TELUS Cup.

Tristan Roy led the way with a goal and two assists for the Cantonniers, who are looking to become the first team to win Canada’s National Midget Championship the year after losing in the final since Thunder Bay in 1997.

The first period belonged to Tisdale goaltender Tanner Martin, who stopped all 17 shots he faced to get the game to the intermission without a goal.

The Trojans had a glorious chance to open the scoring early in the second with a two-man advantage for a full minute, but Adam kept the West Region champions at bay before Roy stepped out of the box, took a stretch pass from Zachary Barabé and beat Martin over the glove for a 1-0 lead.

Special teams came up big again for Magog four minutes later when Zackary Michaud kept on a two-on-one and went under the right arm of Martin for a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0.

The floodgates opened in the third period, starting with an unassisted effort by Justin Robidas; he picked up a turnover by Martin deep in the offensive zone and tucked in a wraparound for a three-goal Cantonniers lead just 15 seconds into the final frame.

After Alexandre Doucet took a cross-seam feed from Isaac Belliveau and wired in a power-play goal at 9:53 and Jérémy Lapointe tucked a rebound past Martin at 15:07, Jacob Dion scored another man-advantage marker for Magog to cap the scoring with less than two minutes to go.

Adam was solid throughout, posting the first shutout by a Quebec goaltender at the tournament since Yaniv Perets made 20 saves to help the Lions du Lac St-Louis blank the Saint John Vito’s 5-0 in 2016.

Magog is back in action Tuesday afternoon when they take on the Halifax Macs in the first game of the day (12 p.m. ET), while the Trojans will look to get into the win column when they face the Thunder Bay Kings (7:30 p.m. ET).
