From Alexis Lafrenière to Ryan Tverberg, the 2020 NHL Draft was all about Canadian hockey.

In total, one-third of the players who had their names called during the virtual draft – 73 of 217 – hail from the true north strong and free.

Those players include representation from 10 Members, and 43 who have worn the Maple Leaf in international competition – five of them 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medallists.

The red-and-white run started from the top, with Alexis Lafrenière going No. 1 to the New York Rangers. The Saint-Eustache, Que., native is the first player from his province to be taken with the first pick since Marc-André Fleury in 2003, and the first skater since Vincent Lecavalier in 1998.

Quinton Byfield followed to the Los Angeles Kings at No. 2, becoming the highest-drafted Black player ever and giving Canada the top two picks in the draft for the first time since Aaron Ekblad and Sam Reinhart went 1-2 in 2014.

Lafrenière and Byfield both helped Canada to an 18th gold medal at the World Juniors last winter in the Czech Republic, alongside Jamie Drysdale (sixth overall to Anaheim), Dawson Mercer (18th overall to New Jersey) and Nico Daws (84th to New Jersey).

Canadians accounted for 19 of the 31 first-round picks, the most in a single year since the draft became a truly global event in 1990. (The all-time record is 21, set in 1987 when Canada produced every single first-rounder.)

The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) was well represented among the Canadian contingent; 58 of the 73 players selected – including 18 of the 19 first-round picks – were products of CHL programs, from 39 different teams. The Western Hockey League led the way with 23 picks, followed by the Ontario Hockey League with 21 and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 14.
