GAME NOTES: CANADA VS. UNITED STATES (DECEMBER 19)

TV: TSN | Stream: TSN Direct

Hollywood, here we come! Fresh off its first win of the Rivalry Series, Canada’s National Women’s Team heads to Los Angeles on Monday night, looking to cut the Americans’ series advantage to one.

LAST GAME

It was yet another nailbiter between the Canadians and Americans on Thursday night in Henderson, Nev. Jamie Lee Rattray and Blayre Turnbull cancelled out the U.S. opener with second-period goals to give Canada a one-goal lead after 40 minutes. Hilary Knight pulled the hosts even early in the third, but Sarah Nurse snuck in a sharp-angle shot with 4:56 left to put the Canadians ahead for good in a 3-2 win. Twenty-one saves for Kristen Campbell, 12 of them in the final period when the U.S. had a 13-2 edge in shots.

WHAT TO WATCH

With the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship set for Brampton, Ont., next April, the Canadian coaching staff has just under four months to figure out what the roster will look like come the spring. One of the big questions – who will play on the left wing with Marie-Philip Poulin and Brianne Jenner? Jamie Lee Rattray got a look on the top line during the first three games of the series last month, and Élizabeth Giguère was given the assignment on Thursday. With three Rivalry Series games to go, it’ll be a position to pay attention to.

Special teams have not been all that special so far. Through the first four games of the series, the Canadians and Americans have combined to go 3-for-29 on the power play (a 10.3% success rate) and all three goals have come from the team wearing stars and stripes. Yes, the penalty kills have been good, and yes, the goaltending has been solid, but you can bet both teams (especially Canada at 0-for-15) want a little more productivity while a player up.

WELCOMING THE WORLD

As mentioned above, Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association made it official on Thursday – women’s worlds is returning to Ontario for the first time since 2013 when Brampton plays host from April 5-16. It’ll be the fifth worlds to be played in Ontario (Ottawa – 1990, 2013; Kitchener – 1997; Mississauga – 2000).

Fans can sign up now for the priority ticket list to ensure they’ll have front-of-the-line access when tickets go on sale in the new year.

CHASING HISTORY

Poulin was kept off the scoresheet in Henderson, keeping her career totals at 96 goals and 198 points. That leaves the pride of Beauceville, Que., close to becoming the fourth player to score 100 goals with Team Canada (joining Hayley Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford and Danielle Goyette) and the fifth to record 200 points, alongside Wickenheiser, Hefford, Goyette and Caroline Ouellette.

A LOOK BACK

It’s meeting No. 172 between the Canadians and Americans, the 58th on U.S. ice and the seventh in California (five previous games in San Jose, one in Anaheim). Canada holds an all-time edge in the overall (96-74-1) and in games played in the States (31-25-1), while the U.S. has the advantage in games played in the Golden State (4-2)

Thursday’s result was the 10th one-goal finish in the 17 games between the teams since the start of the 2021 IIHF Womens World Championship – including that women’s worlds gold medal game, the 2022 Olympic gold medal game and the 2022 worlds gold medal game.

All-time record: Canada leads 96-74-1 (20-18 in OT/SO)
Canada goals: 467
United States goals: 416
