MOOSE JAW, Sask. – The Prince Albert Mintos (West) have won the 2014 TELUS Cup, claiming Canada’s 41st National Midget Championship with a 4-3 triple-overtime win over the Grenadiers de Châteauguay (Quebec) in Sunday’s gold medal game at Mosaic Place.

The game was the longest in tournament history at 108 minutes and 36 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 102:24 set in the Mintos’ 5-4 win over the Calgary Buffaloes in the gold medal game of the 2006 TELUS Cup.

The victory gives Prince Albert its third gold medal, joining 2006 and 2007. The Mintos are just the sixth team in the history of Canada’s National Midget Championship to win at least three national titles, joining the Regina Pat Canadians (1983, 1988, 1994, 1999), Couillard/Gouverneurs de Ste-Foy (1978, 1979, 1996, 2001), Notre Dame Hounds (1980, 1986, 2009, 2010), Lions du Lac St-Louis (1981, 1985, 1992) and Riverains du Collège Charles-Lemoyne/Richelieu (1987, 1990, 1998).

The Mintos have won all three of their national titles in overtime; in addition to Sunday and the 2006 final, they beat the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in double overtime at the 2007 TELUS Cup.

Dakota Boutin was the overtime hero for Prince Albert, converting a two-on-one feed from Lance Yaremchuk late in the third extra period on the Mintos’ 61st and final shot. Connor Ingram was spectacular in the Prince Albert goal, finishing with 60 saves as Châteauguay held a 63-61 advantage in shots on goal.

Carson Cayer scored twice and Lance Yaremchuk added one for the Mintos, who led 2-1 after one and 3-2 after two, but allowed a power play goal by Châteauguay captain Martin-Olivier Cardinal with 5:25 to go to force overtime.

Tyler Hylland had two goals and Étienne Montpetit made 57 stops for the Grenadiers, who won their second medal in as many appearances at the TELUS Cup; they were bronze medallists at the 2006 national championship.

In Sunday morning’s bronze medal game, the Okanagan Rockets (Pacific) topped the Toronto Young Nationals (Central) 3-2 in overtime to take third place. Linden Hora scored his second goal of the game at 3:28 of the extra period to give the Rockets the win. Liam Finlay had the other goal for Okanagan, which trailed 2-0 early in the third period.

The 2015 TELUS Cup will be held April 20-26, 2015 in Rivière-du-Loup, Que., with the Albatros du Collège Notre-Dame of the Ligue de hockey midget AAA du Québec serving as the host team.
