Game Story

CANADA WINS AGAIN, BLANKS DENMARK AT WORLDS

QUINTON AMUNDSON

KOŠICE, Slovakia – Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver, B.C./Buffalo, NHL) scored twice and Jonathan Marchessault (Cap-Rouge, Que./Vegas, NHL) registered a goal and an assist to lift Canada’s National Men’s Team to a 5-0 victory over Denmark at the 2019 IIHF World Championship on Monday.

Pierre-Luc Dubois (Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que./Columbus, NHL) and Jared McCann (London, Ont./Pittsburgh, NHL) also scored for Canada, which won its fifth-straight game.

Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Philadelphia, NHL) stopped all 21 shots he faced before Mackenzie Blackwood (Thunder Bay, Ont./New Jersey, NHL) played out the final nine minutes.

Canada continued its pattern of starting with authority by outshooting Denmark 17-8 in the first frame and accruing a 3-0 lead in the opening nine minutes.

Dubois broke the ice precisely one minute in, pounding in a shot from point-blank range after Marchessault set him up from behind the Danish cage. McCann broke through for his first goal just over five minutes later with a forehand drive from the high slot, and Marchessault scored on a deflection to cap the scoring spree.

Four power-play opportunities in the second period created an opportunity for Denmark to get more engaged. Solid chances were generated on the man advantages, but Hart denied all nine shots that came his way.

Canada made no mistake on its first power play as Reinhart’s shot from the right circle went top shelf at 13:53 of the middle stanza.

Reinhart found the twine for his second of the game less than five minutes into the final period, tipping in a Philippe Myers (Moncton, N.B./Philadelphia, NHL) wrist shot from the blue-line.

Canada will renew its rivalry with the United States on Tuesday in Košice (2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT) to close out the preliminary round. The victor will be assured of a top-two finish in Group A.
