CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada has announced the addition of Alison Domenico (Ottawa, Ont./Providence College, HE) as an assistant coach with Canada’s National Women’s Team for the 2021-22 season, including the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
She replaces Jim Midgley, who accepted a position as an assistant with the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers on Aug. 24.
Domenico was recently promoted to associate coach with the women’s hockey team at Providence College following three seasons as an assistant coach, helping the Friars reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament this season. Prior to that, Domenico spent seven seasons as an assistant with Syracuse University (2011-18). Internationally, she was previously named an assistant coach with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team for the 2021-22 season, and was an assistant coach with Canada’s National Women’s Team for the Rivalry Series against the United States in February 2020. She has twice served as a camp coach for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp (2019, 2020) and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp (2017, 2018).
“We are fortunate to have Ali join us, bringing experience and a skill set that will complement our coaching staff as we continue our preparations for the Olympics,” said Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.), director of hockey operations with Hockey Canada. “Ali has previous experience with our program, and we expect a smooth transition as she steps into this new role. We are also excited for the incredible opportunity Jim has in front of him. We are fortunate for the time he spent with us in the lead up to and during the recent IIHF Women’s World Championship, helping us win an 11th world title. We wish Jim and his family all the best as he begins this next chapter with the Rangers.”
Canada’s Olympic coaching staff is led by head coach Troy Ryan (Spryfield, N.S.). Domenico will join assistant coaches Kori Cheverie (New Glasgow, N.S./Ryerson University, OUA) and Doug Derraugh (Arnprior, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC), as well as goaltending coach Brad Kirkwood (Calgary, Alta./University of Calgary, CW).
With the women’s worlds complete, the coaching staff and 29 players selected to centralize in Calgary will resume their Olympic training, which is expected include games against the United States, as well as a potential series against Finland.
