RANDAZZO GETS SHUTOUT, HOUNDS BLANK HOSTS AT TELUS CUP

OLIVIA BULLEN

SUDBURY, Ont. – Aaron Randazzo stopped all 19 shots he faced, backstopping the Notre Dame Hounds to a 4-0 win over the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Tuesday night at the 2018 TELUS Cup.

With an energetic home crowd behind them, the Wolves looked to use home ice to their advantage against the four-time national champions, but an early goal quieted the Sudbury Community Arena.

Quinn Schmiemann needed less than three minutes to open the scoring, going end-to-end and sneaking a quick shot past Sudbury goaltender Alex Vendette.

After a parade of penalties in the first period – three to the Hounds, two to the Wolves – Notre Dame added a second goal before the end of the frame; Cordel Larson squeaked one five-hole on Vendette to solidify a two-goal advantage.

Sudbury had a glorious chance to get back within a goal when Parker Savard was pulled down on a shorthanded breakaway and awarded a penalty shot, but his attempt trickled just past the post.

The Wolves threw their bodies at Notre Dame shots in the second period, blocking a number of shots, but couldn’t get in front of them all; Ethan Ernst buried a one-timer on a Hounds power play midway through the middle stanza to make it 3-0.

Drew Englot added a fourth and final goal with less than two minutes to go in the second, pulling off a spin-o-rama and going five-hole on Vendette to finish the scoring.

The Wolves outshot Notre Dame 9-6 in a scoreless third period, almost doubling their shot total for the game in the final 20 minutes.

Sudbury is in action next in the late game Wednesday, facing off against the Moncton Flyers (7 p.m. AT), right after the Hounds take on the Cantonniers de Magog in a battle of unbeaten teams (3:30 p.m. AT).
