Overtime and Shootouts: a Refresher

At the IIHF World Junior Championship, Final Round games go to overtime if the score is tied after 60 minutes of play. Overtime is played 5-on-5, unlike the senior IIHF World Championship, where 4-on-4 is used.

Overtime periods are 10 minutes long, except in the gold medal game (20 minutes).

If the teams remain tied after overtime, a Game Winning Shots Competition (shootout) is used to determine a winner.

Each team must select five shooters to compete in the Game Winning Shots Competition. If the score is still tied after the teams have had five attempts each, the teams continue to shoot in pairings until the shooter of one team misses and the shooter of the other team scores.
