On Jan. 23, the Hockey Canada Skills Academy programs that are part of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board met in Dryden, Ont., for an all-day Jamboree.

Approximately 60 Grade 8 students from Sioux Lookout, Ignace, Vermilion Bay, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Kenora and Dryden met at the Dryden Memorial Arena for a fun-filled day of hockey.

Students started the day with 10 different skill-testing stations set up in two adjacent ice surfaces. This was an opportunity to showcase their skills. The drills tested edge work, transitioning, puck control, passing and shooting ability.

Following the skill testing, students had lunch and were able to spend time collaborating and discussing their own experiences in the academy. It is always rewarding to see how local kids in different communities socialize and build friendships. Quite often these friendships are lifelong.

After lunch, the students went back on the ice for a variety of cross-ice and small-area games.

At the end of the day, most kids were exhausted and finished the day with a group photo. They had a great day of collaboration, socializing and playing the game they love with a smile on their faces. It will be a day to remember for all students involved.
