HALIFAX & TRURO, N.S. – As excitement continues to build in Nova Scotia with the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship just over one month away, Hockey Canada has unveiled the pre-tournament schedule.

Seven communities across Nova Scotia will play host to nine competing teams and five women’s U SPORTS teams for 10 pre-tournament games from March 25-29, before the puck officially drops March 31 on the women’s worlds in Halifax and Truro.

“The pre-tournament schedule is yet another milestone as we continue to prepare to welcome the world to Nova Scotia in March, and to work with a number of communities throughout Nova Scotia to allow hockey fans in the region an opportunity to experience the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship,” said Grant MacDonald, general manager of the event. “We look forward to providing a world-class experience for fans and teams in all seven pre-tournament communities, and to use the Jed Ritcey Fund from the 2017 World Junior A Challenge legacy to invite students from various schools in the Truro area to games at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.”

“We are thrilled to be involved in such a significant event and we look forward to welcoming some of the best hockey players from around the world to our community,” said Christine Blair, Mayor of the Municipality of the County of Colchester. “We are especially excited to learn of the opportunity to cheer on Team Canada on our home ice at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre during pre-tournament action, and to continue to support Team Canada as it competes for a gold medal in Nova Scotia.”

“We are excited for the IIHF Women’s World Championship to return to Nova Scotia, and for hockey fans in Truro to experience incredible Canadian athletes and the top players in the world,” said Bill Mills, Mayor of the Town of Truro. “I know hockey fans in Truro and across Nova Scotia are looking forward to watching the skill and speed of the competing teams, and we are thrilled to work with many great Nova Scotia communities to host memorable pre-tournament games.”

Hockey Canada has also announced that fans can purchase a new Team Canada ticket package starting Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. AT for as low as $179 plus applicable fees, which includes one ticket to each Team Canada preliminary-round game, both semifinals, and the bronze and gold medal games. The Team Canada package, as well as full-event ticket packages and five-game mini-packages, can be purchased online at HockeyCanada.ca/Tickets.

TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will broadcast all 16 tournament games in Halifax, as well as both quarterfinals in Truro, while providing extensive coverage throughout the event.

Hockey Canada announced in October 2018 that the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship would be returning to the Province of Nova Scotia, with Halifax and Truro set to co-host the event from March 31-April 10. Strong support has Nova Scotia excited to host women’s worlds, with the province embracing the slogan It’s Our Time as it prepares to welcome the world.

Recent editions of the IIHF Women’s World Championship hosted in Canada have brought significant economic impact to the host provinces. British Columbia (2016) benefited from $7.4 million in economic impact throughout the province, with $6.2 million being generated in Kamloops alone. Ontario (2013) was even more successful, bringing in $14.3 million to the province, of which $8.8 million occurred in Ottawa. As with all IIHF events hosted in Canada, a legacy plan for the profits of the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship will support grassroots hockey initiatives across the province and throughout Hockey Canada’s 13 regional members.
