Hockey Canada Foundation leaves $371,649 legacy in Edmonton

2019 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf in Edmonton nets over $743,000 to support the growth of hockey

November 12, 2019

EDMONTON, Alta. – Two minor hockey programs in the City of Edmonton will benefit from $371,649 in funding as a result of 2019 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf, hosted in Edmonton last June.

The Hockey Canada Foundation assembled members of the 2019 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf legacy committee at the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame on Tuesday to present the legacy cheques to the Oilers Entertainment Group’s 2nd Shift program and Hockey Alberta’s Every Kid Every Community initiative. Event co-chairs Ashif and Zainul Mawji and Hockey Alberta Foundation vice-chair Dennis Zukiwsky were on hand to accept the cheques.

“The Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf is one of our marquee events and our single largest annual fundraiser for the continual growth of hockey from coast to coast to coast. We are thrilled to be able to leave behind over $371,000 in legacy funds to ensure children and their families can pursue their passion for hockey in Edmonton and surrounding communities,” said Doug Goss, chair of the Hockey Canada Foundation. “Edmonton has proven to be a fantastic host city with tremendous volunteer and community support, and we can’t thank Ashif and Zainul Mawji, the Oilers Entertainment Group, Hockey Alberta and the rest of the committee enough for their efforts in ensuring the 2019 Gala & Golf was a success.”

Funds from the $371,649 legacy will be split evenly between the 2nd Shift and Every Kid Every Community programs to help provide children of all backgrounds and circumstances the opportunity to experience hockey.

The 2nd Shift program provides youth the opportunity to participate in the game of hockey. It is an accessible and affordable initiative designed to bridge the gap between learn-to-play programs, such as the NHL/NHLPA First Shift, and minor hockey registration with more access to skill development and learning sessions to encourage continued participation in the game.

The Every Kid Every Community program was launched by Hockey Alberta in 2011 with the goal of ensuring a gateway to hockey for any child in Alberta who is interested in the sport. The goal is to provide every child the opportunity to play hockey, have fun and, in many cases, experience the sport for the first time.

The Hockey Canada Foundation understands the vital role of hockey in Canada and has a mandate to grow the game at the grassroots level across the country. The Foundation has raised over $7.5 million through its Gala & Golf events alone since 2009, with a goal of strengthening the bond between Canadians and hockey by identifying opportunities to enable, engage and educate players, coaches and fans.
