FRYKAS FIRES FOR TEAM MANITOBA NAPANEE, ON – Team Manitoba concluded its preliminary round with a win and, in the process, booked its ticket for the semi-finals at the 2008 National Women’s Under-18 Championship. Manitoba defeated Alberta 4-1 on Friday morning to move to 2-1 for the event. Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, MB/Detroit Little Caesars) scored two goals to lead Manitoba, with Christine Bestland (Brunkild, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) and Rachele Bosc (Dufresne, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) adding singles. Manitoba got things started quickly in the game, as Frykas scored her first of the game at 3:50 of the first. Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers), the youngest player in this tournament at 14, took a shot from the point with her team on a 5-on-3 power play. Frykas buzzed around the net and jammed in the rebound. “It’s important getting the first goal of the game because it gets out team momentum and a bit of jump,” Frykas said following the game. Manitoba took a 2-0 lead Bestland’s goal in the second and then made it 3-0 early in the third when Frykas sniped her second of the game. Alberta got on the board at 7:41 when Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton Thunder, AFFMHL) scored. Bosc finished the scoring at 12:36. Manitoba will await the remainder of Friday’s results to see where it finishes in Group B and which team it will face in the semi-final. Manitoba is one of the youngest teams at this tournament and includes a number of players born in 1992, 1993 and 1994. The event is for players born in 1991 or later. Frykas said her club took some time to get going but now the team is hitting its stride. “It’s good. The girls got the nerves out in the first game,” said Frykas. “Now we’re showing what we can do as a small province.” Manitoba won bronze at the 2007 National Women’s Under-18 Championship. |
