Under-9 Hockey

U9 hockey is a fun, safe and engaging next step in Canada’s game

You've watched your little one learn the basics. U9 is the next step to enjoying sports for life.

U9 makes sure that taking early strides in the game is a safe and positive experience, introducing newcomers to basic skills. Kids form friendships, develop self-confidence and experience personal achievement, all through fun and fair play.

Canadian hockey parents familiar with half-ice U9 games are fully behind the initiative because it promotes skill development, self-confidence, teamwork and fun.
Age-appropriate programs mean more ‘hands on’ hockey, which means improved skill development and more fun.
If a new player has fun, develops skills and builds confidence, they are on the road to enjoying hockey for life.
Hockey Canada and its members have provided MHAs with the resources to implement U9 hockey across the country.
Why half-ice? Can teams go to full-ice? Are there full-time goalies? Are there officials? How are coaches supported?
(My son) had much more opportunity with the puck – to skate with the puck on his stick, shoot on the net… (it) made the ice times incredibly fun.”

– Christine G., hockey mom, on the benefits of half-ice hockey

U9 hockey is where the building blocks of the game are refined and reinforced. But the program plays an important role in the special bonds that last long past the end of the game, forging friendships and making memories that are the backbone of the hockey experience.
