REBELLION ENDS; HOUNDS TO PLAY QUEENS IN FINAL

REGINA, Sask. – The rebellion is officially over.

Host team the Regina Rebels fell 5-0 in semi-final action Friday, as a hometown crowd watched on in dismay while a large group of rowdy Notre Dame fans decked out in red cheered their Hounds on to a shutout victory.

And the road to for the representatives from the West started almost immediately, with Taylor Woods (Wilcox, Sask.) pulled off a pretty little move in front of the net before putting the puck past the Regina goal line just 37 seconds into the game.

Brienna Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.), who led round robin play in scoring, followed up about two minutes later by tipping in another one for the Hounds, with Alyssa Threadkell (Cold Lake, Alta.) and Lindsay Brook (Ste. Rose, Man.) both helping out.

A penalty certainly didn’t help Regina’s case, with Woods scoring her second of the night on a rebound to put Notre Dame up 3-0, with assists going to Gillanders and Gabriela Stewart (Mississauga, Ont.) and the fans that travelled from the nearby school erupting into cheers once again.

But the Hounds’ assault on the Rebels wasn’t over yet, not even in the first period alone, with Gillanders getting her second goal and third point of the night at the 15:39 mark. Woods was credited with the assist.

Coming out of the dressing room into the second, the Rebels fought back hard and kept the puck away from their net, but the Hounds topped off their shutout win at 5-0 early in the third, thanks to a goal from Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.).

The semifinal win puts the Notre Dame Hounds into the gold medal game against the Thunder Bay Queens. The puck drops at 4 p.m. CT inside the Co-operators Centre. If you can’t be there, watch the last of 2010 Esso Cup action live on TSN2.
