2019 National Junior A Championship

DAY 9 – SUNDAY, MAY 19

Simon Boyko (Brooks Bandits)
Simon says … win a championship. The Bandits forward did it again, turning in his second stand-out performance in as many days, this time on the biggest stage in the Junior A game. Boyko opened the scoring within the first two minutes, getting the SRO crowd into it early, and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal late in the second period, helping Brooks claim a second national championship.

DAY 8 – SATURDAY, MAY 18

Simon Boyko (Brooks Bandits)
What better time for your first two points of the NJAC? The Bandits will play for a national championship Sunday thanks in large part to Boyko, who was in on the two biggest goals of the game. He opened the scoring early, beating tournament MVP Francis Boisvert on a breakaway less than three minutes after puck drop, and was playmaker on the game-winning goal, setting up behind the net and finding Ryan Mahshie in the slot.

DAY 6 – THURSDAY, MAY 16

Peyton Reeves (Oakville Blades)
The Blades captain did it every which way in a win over Ottawa, scoring a goal in each period. He showed off his shot in the first period, going upstairs with a short-side wrister; he showed off his hands in the second, deftly redirecting in a Garrett Pyke shot; and he showed off his speed in the third, racing away to finish his hat trick into an empty net and give Oakville a little bit of momentum heading into its first-ever national semifinal.

DAY 5 – WEDNESDAY, MAY 15

Dylan Anhorn (Prince George Spruce Kings)
It was another team effort by the Spruce Kings, with five players scoring and 12 recording points, but the defenceman was a beast at both ends. Anhorn got the scoring started early, showing off his slick hands with a highlight-reel goal just 55 seconds in, and helped anchor a blue-line that produced another gem, holding the Terriers – who were 10th in the CJHL in goals per game this season (4.62 GPG) – to just 10 shots.

DAY 4 – TUESDAY, MAY 14

Spencer Kersten (Oakville Blades)
When your season is on the line, who else do you turn to but your leading scorer? Kersten – who had 92 points in 72 regular-season and playoff games – sparked the Blades to a win over Portage; he helped set up Kyle Lewis and Josh Nixon before capping a three-point first period with a power-play goal, and he had the primary helper on the game-winner by Harrison Israels to send the Central champs into the semifinals.

DAY 3 – MONDAY, MAY 13

Ben Brar (Prince George Spruce Kings)
It continues to be scoring by committee for the unbeaten Spruce Kings, who have eight goals from seven different players through two games (only Nick Poisson has netted twice). Brar got into the act against the Jr. Senators, helping set up Nick Bochen for a power-play goal in the last minute of the first period before hammering home a one-timer in the first minute of the second to put Prince George in total control.

DAY 2 – SUNDAY, MAY 12

Simon Gravel (Brooks Bandits)
The straw that stirred the drink in the Bandits’ come-from-behind win over Portage, Gravel helped set up William Lemay to get the comeback started late in the second period before supplying the offence himself in the third – the Boucherville, Que., native jammed in the game-winning goal in the first minute of the final frame and capped the scoring into an empty net in the last minute to help the hosts to a second victory.

DAY 1 – SATURDAY, MAY 11

Luke Bast (Brooks Bandits)
The Bandits spread around the scoring, with six players finding the back of the net and 13 putting their names on the scoresheet, but it was Bast who was best. The defenceman jumped in off the blue-line to erase an early deficit, helped set up the goal that gave Brooks the lead for good midway through the first period and powered to the net to add breathing room late in the second, helping the hosts gain a little early momentum.
